FAQ

Why does growing wheatgrass not need soil?

Growing wheatgrass in soil is extremely messy and unnecessary. Most soils are home to many different living organisms such as earthworms, ants, insects and fauna. Therefore it wouldn’t be ideal if you were planning to juice and drink your wheatgrass. Using a domestic wipes cleaning cloth is a cleaner and more efficient alternative. You don’t have to worry about the soil contaminating your juice. Wheatgrass are able to grow with just water as it provides sufficient nutrients in order for it to grow long enough for juicing.

Whilst it is true that soil contains mineral nutrients necessary for healthy plant development, this will not be the case for growing wheatgrass. It is important to understand that plants do not absorb nutrients from the ground until they have a taproot. The time span for growing wheatgrass will not be long enough to develop a taproot.

Why do I need to cover the drip tray in the initial stages when growing the wheatgrass?

It is imperative to keep the drip tray covered in the initial stages in order to keep the grain moist and to stop it from drying. This method allows the sprouts to grow faster as well as the roots. Young plants are able to grow without light for a period of time; this is because they are living off the food stored in the seed. Plants naturally grow faster in the dark because they are looking for a light source.

Keeping the tray covered for the first 3 days will accelerate the growing process. The next days after the wheatgrass will utilise the light source from the sun to grow through photosynthesis (converting light source into chemical energy resulting in fuel for the plants).

You’ll notice that if you don’t cover the drip tray, the wheatgrass won’t grow as fast and won’t be as tall.

How long will it take until I can start juicing the wheatgrass?

It takes approximately 12 days for the wheatgrass to reach its full potential for cutting and juicing.

How much quantity of wheatgrass juice will I get with one tray of wheatgrass?

It really depends on how long you soak the wheatgrass in water after cutting it (NOTE: you will need to soak the leaves in water in order to yield maximum juice). We normally cut the leaves off and then soak it in water for approximately 30 minutes; this allows the leaves to soak up the water. After juicing, we normally get around 500-600ml of wheatgrass juice. It also depends on how much of the leaves you cut.

How much wheatgrass juice should I drink?

Wheatgrass juice is extremely potent therefore just 2 shots of juice daily is sufficient for optimum health and wellbeing. A shot of wheatgrass juice is about 30ml. However, if you’re just starting out, it may be feasible to start with just one shot of wheatgrass a day and build up to the recommended 2 shots after a week or so. This is to just get your body accustomed to the taste and effect. Drinking too much may cause diarrhea in some individuals; wheatgrass juice has a detoxifying effect that rapidly removes toxins from the body.

Headaches, nausea and diarrhoea are common side effects of wheatgrass juice, especially with new wheatgrass drinkers. However, as your body gets used to it, it will eventually subside within a few days of regular use.

As you get more comfortable and able to drink the recommended 2 shots, you may want to increase your intake to 4 shots daily. It all depends on you and how your body handles it. But 2 shots daily should be sufficient. Higher doses may help overcome degenerative diseases.

It is recommended to drink wheatgrass juice on an empty stomach; this reduces the chances of developing any of the side effects mentioned. Once consumed, let it digest for at least half an hour before eating, allowing the juice to be absorbed in the body.

Can I mix wheatgrass juice with other juices?

To reap the full benefits, it is best just to consume wheatgrass juice by itself. However, if your not looking to overcome a degenerative condition, than you’re welcome to mix wheatgrass juice with other juices. Some common juice partners include Celery juice, Apple juice, Carrot juice and Orange juice.

If I’m unable to grow wheatgrass, what is the best alternative choice?

Fresh wheatgrass juice is unmatched. We always recommend fresh juice over any wheatgrass powdered form. Fresh wheatgrass juice contains live enzymes that fight off microbes and viruses. Evidently when converted to powered form it loses the live enzymes and also loses some of its nutritional value.

If you’re unable to grow your own wheatgrass then it’s best to purchase fresh juice from your local juice outlet. This would be the best alternative. Fresh juice allows you to know exactly where it originated from, giving you assurance of its quality – whether you’re growing your own or observing someone juicing the leaves yourself. However, if you really can’t obtain fresh juice than you may resort to the powdered form.

What juicer do you recommend?

Please refer to the Juicers page to determine the juicer that best suits your needs.

Can I put the wheatgrass in the blender oppose to juicing it?

Yes, a blender is a great alternative for a juicer, considering it has a powerful motor that can pulverize the wheatgrass leaves into smithereens- ie. 2+ horsepower motor should be sufficient. You’ll also need a strainer to get that smooth consistency for the juice.

How should I consume wheatgrass juice?

Many individuals don’t know this but its best to hold the wheatgrass juice in your mouth before swallowing it. The reason being, when the juice is held in the mouth, your body absorbs the nutrients and bioactive components of the juice much more rapidly than swallowing it straight away. The Oral mucosa (mucous membrane in the mouth) is able to absorb the nutrients and bioactive components in the juice instantaneously and directs it into the bloodstream and allows it to circulate through the body, giving you immediate effect.

How to get rid of the wheatgrass mould?

Mould occurs in high humidity conditions and has a puffy white cloud-like resemblance. The mould is harmless but some individuals are turned off by it.
In order to prevent/stop the mould from occurring, you need to water the wheatgrass really thoroughly, targeting every section/area of the wheatgrass. This helps to wash down the mould.
